SEO isn't dead.

But search is changing.

People aren't just typing a few keywords into Google anymore. They're asking ChatGPT, Gemini, AI-powered search, and other tools complete questions and expecting an answer like they are talking to a live person.

So the question for your business isn't just:

“Can people find my website on Google?”

It's now becoming:

“Can search engines and AI actually understand my business well enough to recommend it?”

That's where GEO comes in.

What Is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization.

In simple terms, it's about creating and structuring your website content so AI-powered search systems can better understand your business and potentially use your content when answering someone's question.

And here's the important part...

GEO doesn't replace SEO.

It builds on it. Adds to it and can actually benefit your websites traffic even more than regualr SEO.

The same things that make a website easier for Google to understand.... clear content, logical structure, useful information, strong internal linking, relevant schema, and topical expertise, can also help AI systems understand your business.

But there's more to it than adding keywords.

Your Website Needs to Actually Say Something

This is where I see businesses missing the opportunity.

Your website might look good, but if your content is vague, AI has very little to work with.

“Creating elevated experiences for modern brands.”

Okay.....cool.

But what do you actually do?

Who do you help?

Where do you work?

What problems do you solve?

What makes you different?

Clarity matters. ESPECIALLY to AI Agents; since people talk to AI like they talk to a person... "Who is the best ___ in my town?" "These are the problems I am having I need you to tell me the best way to solve___"

Your website should clearly communicate the answers to those questions throughout your pages and content.

And this is one reason I encourage my clients to think beyond their service pages....

Your blog can become an incredibly valuable part of your visibility strategy! Because blogs are typically written to be more "personal" and informative. Often blog posts will answer those direct questions people are asking AI.

A Real Example From One of My Clients

One of my clients started intentionally creating content around the questions their ideal clients were actually searching for.

Not generic “SEO blog posts.”

Real questions.

Real problems.

Real content. (not AI written content!)

We focused on creating useful, specific content that gave search engines and AI systems more context about the business and what they specialize in. Answering direct questions their ideal clients typically ask...

And the result?

Their website traffic increased.

The content wasn't simply sitting there taking up space on a blog.

It was creating more opportunities for people to discover the business through search.

The website wasn't just looking authoritative.

It was actually becoming a source of information.

And that's a very different approach to content.

Now, not every business needs blog posts in order to bring in traffic but it DOES help! I tell me clients all the time, blog posts are less for people to come to your site and read on their own, and more of a gateway TO your site. Blog posts are most targeted towards people that aren't on your site already and for searching benefits.

So How Do You Optimize Your Website for GEO?

You don't need to fill your website with AI buzzwords or keywords (This is called Keyword stuffing and Google actually dings your site for this!)

You need to make your expertise easier to understand.

1. Be ridiculously clear about what you do.

Your homepage and service pages should make it obvious:

Who you are.What you do.Who you help.Where you work.Why you're different.

Don't make people or search engines and AI agents guess...

2. Answer the questions your clients are already asking.

Your blog shouldn't exist because someone told you that “businesses need blogs.”

Write about the questions your ideal clients actually have.

Think:

  • How much does ___ cost?

  • Do I really need ___?

  • What's the difference between ___ and ___?

  • What should I look for when hiring ___?

  • Why isn't my ___ working?

  • What should I know before investing in ___?

Those questions can become incredibly valuable content.

3. Go deeper than everyone else.

If you claim expertise in something, demonstrate it.

Share your experience.

Explain your process.

Break down complicated topics.

Give examples.

Have an opinion based on actual experience.

Generic content is everywhere. Expertise isn't.

(AI written content gets negatively flagged by search engines, by the way... so your content needs to be original and "written for humans, by humans"

4. Build connections between your pages.

Your blog should connect to your services and other relevant pages on your site. (Google LOVES internal linking... this also helps them and AI agents understand your content and business)

Your services should connect to relevant resources.

Your website should feel like one connected ecosystem rather than a collection of random pages.

5. Don't forget the technical foundation.

SEO still matters.

Your website should be crawlable, logically structured, mobile-friendly, and properly organized. ADA Compliance still matters for SEO reasons! Read more about ADA Compliance ✅

Relevant structured data can also help search engines understand what different pages represent.

That's the behind-the-scenes work that supports everything else that DIYers don't think about or know how to structure.

"A beautiful website means nothing if no one can find it."
